Previously, he held several high-level political positions in Belgium including minister of defense, minister of foreign affairs, foreign trade and European affairs, minister of finance and deputy prime minister. From 2004 to 2011, he served as chairman of the Mouvement R\u00e9formateur (liberal party alliance). He was elected member of the <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Belgian <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Parliament in 1992. Prior to this, he <\/span><span class=\"s2\">w<\/span><span class=\"s2\">as preside<\/span><span class=\"s2\">nt of <\/span><span class=\"s2\">the <\/span><span class=\"s2\">National Railway Company of Belgium<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> and the<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> National Society of Airways<\/span><span class=\"s2\">. He was in charge of heritage management and digitalization.<\/p><p>Together with the Walloon Brabant Property Development Agency, he was responsible for the development of new large-scale &#8216;New Place of Working&#8217; (NPOW) projects.<\/p><p>In terms of digital technology, Mr. Michel has worked on the digitalization of the entire territory of Walloon Brabant, turning its 27 communes into true &#8220;smart cities&#8221;. With the objective to further digitize the provincial schools they have been fully equipped with the latest computer equipment.<\/p><p>Artificial intelligence is one of his priorities. His objective is to mark Belgium&#8217;s position as a European leader in the field of AI, particularly in the field of health and energy. He is keen to demystify the use of new technologies and advocates for transparency as an essential component of technological innovation and the algorithms on which it is based.<\/p><p>As the person responsible for privacy in the federal government, Mr. Michel initiated the process of evaluating and updating the Privacy Act. His tasks include monitoring the implementation of the EU data protection rules (in particular the GDPR and the data protection Law Enforcement Directive) and <span lang=\"EN-US\">the respect of these rules in all EU policies<\/span>.<\/p><p>He joined the European Commission in 1996 where he notably followed the bilateral trade relations between the EU and Asia for 12 years, first in the Directorate General for Trade, then in the EU Delegation in China.
